The unique Omniball spring-loaded contacts feature a rolling ball interface that enables contact between axially and non-axially aligned components. These versatile connectors contribute to creative solutions for innovative interconnect designs while providing improved electrical, mechanical and structural reliability. These connectors utilize Omniball contacts: gold-plated brass balls instead of the spring-loaded pins of traditional plungers. They are designed to optimize the connection between components in sliding or rotating contact. On contact, the ball indents and rolls to make contact with the mating surfaces, which can then be easily slid parallel to each other, while the elasticity ensures consistent electrical contact. This rolling action prevents the sticking, premature wear and structural failure that traditional plunger-style spring-loaded pin connectors are susceptible to in these applications.Omniball connectors are available with 4 mm (0.1575 in.) pin spacing, 6.76 mm (0.266 in.) above board height, and are available in through-hole or surface mount termination styles. Threaded insert options are available to provide secure mounting in ruggedized applications and can also be used for locating pins on surface mount connectors. Insulator material is nylon 4/6 for excellent high-temperature performance, dielectric strength, and mechanical toughness. the Omniball contacts have a larger stroke of 0.762 mm (0.030 in.), gold plating on all assemblies, and a ball interface diameter of 2.3 mm (0.091 in.). These spring-loaded pins are durable, tested to 1,000,000 compression cycles, with a half-stroke roll of more than 108 km (67 miles) while still meeting the 30 mΩ contact resistance specification and a spring force of 55 grams at half-stroke (0.381 mm, 0.015 in.). These connectors can be used to eliminate cables for board-to-bus connections in tight spaces.
