Driven by the two major trends of the Internet of Things (IoT) and the mobile Internet, 5G is becoming the center of attention, while the progress on 5G has been driven by individual companies' efforts and has not resulted in a global-type standard or alliance. The good news is that recently the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) announced a timetable for the standardization of 5G technology at a working meeting held in San Diego, California, where the ITU has agreed to the definition of a 5G communications network and expects that the future 5G network will have a speed of at least 20 Gbps, which is exactly twice as fast as the previous anecdotal prediction of 10 Gbps. The meeting proposed that the official name of the 5G technology is IMT-2020, and that the 5G standard will be specified in 2020.The ITU plans to finalize the 5G Statement of Objectives this year, and to gradually define the technical performance requirements for 5G starting in early 2016. According to ITU projections, the air interface of 5G networks will support channels with a bandwidth of 20Gbps. With a 5G network of at least 20Gbps, a user will be able to download a UHD (Ultra HD, with a resolution of 4x Full HD and 9x HD) movie in 10 seconds, although this refers to the transmission capacity of the entire channel, not the download speeds available to a single user.5G networks will also be able to provide more than one million IoT devices over a square kilometer with more than 100Mbps of average data transfer speeds. Although standardization won't be complete until 2020 and commercialization will only begin thereafter, the first major demonstration event will take place in 2018, with the ITU planning to demonstrate 5G technology at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea. Although commercialization won't begin until 2020, the first major demonstration event will take place in 2018. ITU plans to demonstrate 5G technology at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea. KT will be the official sponsor of the demonstration of 5G technology for the games. In addition, international spectrum allocation for 5G networks will begin in 2019.
