In today's world of the Internet, the number of devices connected to the Internet is increasing. According to the research company, 127 new devices are connected to the Internet every second, and there are billions of connected devices worldwide. Switches are at the heart of network architecture capabilities, allowing data to pass between connected computers and devices, as well as to the larger network via protocols such as Ethernet. Protecting these switches is especially important in applications such as harsh environments, in-vehicle networking, discrete and process manufacturing. To ensure proper operation in harsh environments, Ethernet switches need to be hardened. Unfortunately, for most system designers, it is much more complicated than specifying the number of ports or the required data speed. As connectivity plays an increasingly important role in non-commercial applications, these factors must be considered to ensure efficient, long-lasting embedded system performance. Choosing the wrong switch or failing to fully plan for operational and environmental requirements is a costly mistake, but it can be avoided with planning and consideration.
