I. What types of terminals are available for heavy-duty connectors?1. Screw terminals are those with screws for securing cables or wires. Commonly, the screws have flat connectors, and these types of terminals are often used where voltage and current requirements are moderate (home/commercial wiring). Although the wires bound to the terminals are not physically bonded through the use of solder, they are very strong and serviceable if handled correctly. Extreme care should be taken when tightening the terminal block as over-tightening can damage the inserted cables and result in an unreliable and potentially hazardous connection.2. Barrier terminals are very similar to screw terminals in that they utilize screws as the mechanism for securing the cables. Barrier terminals typically have more than one termination point for multiple cables, so the barriers between individual terminals are small. Barrier terminals can also have smaller covers and housings to further protect cable connections, and are typically used in home wiring and other high-voltage applications where protection from arcing or potential short circuits is required.3. Push-in terminals use a small spring-loaded lever that allows cables to enter the junction box in one direction, but does not allow them to leave, thus effectively holding the wires in place; hence the name "push-in type". This type of connector has some advantages over screw terminals because they prevent over-tightening, but as a result, designers rely on springs, which have enough force to keep the wires in contact with the conductor. Another problem with push-to-fit terminals is that some terminals are not reusable and lack removal levers, which makes servicing difficult because the entire terminal may need to be replaced.4. Pluggable terminals are those terminal blocks that have a cable inlet to allow connection of wires or cables, but have a plug output to allow easy connection to an outlet. These types of terminal blocks are useful in situations where hot plugging may be important or where removable connections are expected for maintenance or inspection. Screw contacts are the most common connection method for inserting cables, but the screws usually have a small metal plate on the end to grip both small and large cables.
