The industrial sector has transitioned from mechanical to electronic controls and is now in the middle of digital transformation. The rise of smart cities, smart grids, smart factories, and smart IoT automation markets is influencing the growth prospects of industrial connectors, according to a survey report analyzing the connector market. Connectors designed for the industrial market come in a variety of shapes and sizes and are subject to various standards and specifications, depending on the type of application, end-use, and so on. These applications typically include industrial "factory floor" environments, but also include power generation and distribution, machinery, mining, geophysical exploration and heavy construction, and agricultural equipment. Industrial connectors can be divided into two basic categories. On the one hand, there are military specification-defined (circular and rectangular) connectors. These interconnects are inherently resistant to mechanical abuse and many of the interfaces and ports utilize interface seals and wire seals to maintain the integrity of the electrical interface and meet MIL specifications. On the other hand, commercial grade connectors have been adapted to industrial environments with the addition of seals, improved contact designs and tougher or new materials to withstand challenging environments. Today, environmentally sealed connectors suitable for or used in harsh environments are available for virtually all types of applications in a variety of end-use markets, including input/output (I/O), power and signaling. They come in the form of circular, rectangular, cable and panel mount, board-to-board, mezzanine and even coaxial RF connectors, and new connectors of all styles continue to enter the marketplace through innovative hermaphroditic or elastomeric contacts. While most of these industrial connector interfaces are based on copper conductors, fiber optics have begun to penetrate specific markets such as factory automation networks and "big data" applications due to their specific characteristics, including high bandwidth and resistance to electromagnetic interference. According to the data, it is expected that the Industrial Internet of Things will continue to have a positive impact on factory automation, generating growth in industrial automation and process control, as well as in machine tools, machinery and robotics. As automation becomes a long-term trend in the industry, robotics will gain traction. The implementation of smart grids has led to a surge in growth in the energy sector in many and regions, and it will continue to be driven by the development of new or other alternative energy sources. Based on this, the energy sector is forecast to grow to the third fastest growing industry at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5%.
