I. A few common types of cable assemblies?1. Semi-Rigid Semi-rigid (unsuitable) cables are designed for high-performance applications (some cables exceeding 100 GHz), where the installation is long term and there is *very little* movement of the cable after installation. In the case of this type of cable, the outer shield is a strong piece of metal, usually copper, which needs to be held in place using special tools. Semi-rigid cables cannot usually be reorganized without damaging the outer shield, so they are not as flexible as conformal cables. However, because the outer shield is solid, isolation performance is the highest of all cable types*. Semi-rigid cables usually do not have an outer shield.2. Integrated conformal cables are similar to semi-rigid cables, but have an outer shield made of braided material (usually a copper-tin composite) rather than a solid sheet of metal. Most conformal cable types are rated for at least 15 GHz. the braided construction forms a more pliable cable that can be bent into place without special tools. Once a cable is formed, it will hold its shape indefinitely. Conformal cables can be bent into different shapes many times without damage. Even though they are more flexible than semi-rigid cables, conformal cables work best in applications where movement is infrequent*. Although more flexible than semi-rigid, the performance of conformal cables deteriorates rapidly if the cable is frequently moved, bent or twisted, usually at the end of the cable near the connector. Conformal cables usually do not have an outer jacket.3. Flexible cable flexible wiring performs well in applications where it is common for test cables to move or require frequent connection to the device under test (DUT).75Ω flexible cables are easy to bend for quick connection but do not necessarily maintain their shape. A wide range of flexible cables are available, with special types designed for low loss, high power or extra flexibility. The isolation performance of flexible cables (usually listed in cable data sheets) varies considerably, depending on the coverage of the outer shield conductor. Flexible cables usually have an outer jacket made of PVC or similar material.
