The fifth-generation mobile communication system (5G) is expected to be used in a wider range of fields in the future, thanks to its high speed, high capacity, multi-connectivity, and low latency (real-time) characteristics. 1.JAE|Japan Avionics FO-BD7 Series Connectors Solve Heat Dissipation Problems in 5G Communication Base Stations.

For 5G base stations, heat dissipation due to increased power consumption will be a major issue. In particular, SFP transceivers, which perform optical/electrical conversion, need to be protected from heat by heat sinks, cooling fans, etc., because high temperatures affect their service life, making it difficult to downsize the 5G base station overall. In order to achieve a solution to the heat dissipation problem and to miniaturize the 5G base station, the FO-BD7 series adopts a structure that transfers the SFP transceiver from the base station and builds it into the connector. an SFP transceiver is built into the connector of the FO-BD7 series, which can be kept away from the heating elements inside the base station. Since the heat from the heating element inside the base station is transferred to the mounting bracket through the circuit board and then dissipated to the housing panel through the socket, it makes it difficult for the heat to be transferred to the SFP transceiver. In addition, the barrel used to wrap the SFP transceiver is also metal, making it a connector that can dissipate heat from the SFP transceiver.

The FO-BD7 series has been proven to reduce the temperature of SFP transceivers by approximately 10°C for 5G base stations that require direct connectivity using SFP transceivers.
