Definition and use of sealing connectors

Hermetically sealed connectors have contacts sealed to protect against air and gas, while environmentally sealed connectors have IP or Ingress Protection rated seals. Hermetically sealed connectors typically use glass, ceramic or epoxy to form a compression seal. They are designed to withstand high pressures and are therefore often used in military and aerospace designs or deep sea applications. Environmentally sealed connectors protect against harmful contaminants such as water, dust and dirt. They are designed to maintain the electrical performance of the contacts and these are commonly used in mobile machinery, marine and road vehicles.

And environmental seals on connectors use interface seals to prevent contaminants from entering the intersection between the connection areas. In low-temperature applications that require repeatable mating and non-mating, these O-ring seals are usually made of some type of rubber, with fluoropolymers and ethylene propylene rubber being the most common. When selecting a connector, it is important to understand the requirements of the application. For example, the IP rating is determined by its resistance to dust and dirt (this is a number, 1 through 6) and the connector's ability to withstand liquid immersion for a specific time and depth (a second number, 1 through 8). Just like IP67 compared to IP68 means they can both withstand dust ingress after 8 times, but IP67 can only be immersed to 1 meter for 30 minutes while IP68 is over 1 meter at 30 minutes. For IP68, connector manufacturers must specify the depth to which the connector will be submerged by water.
