1. Types of stamped contacts for connectors: stamped contacts usually have blanked and formed flexible retention features (or spears) as components of connector contacts. These spear bars usually take the shape of simple cantilever springs, which can be curved, tapered, straight or bent, and usually extend away from the contact body. Although connector stamped contacts are suitable for many applications, the performance of the stamped retention spear may be limited by the material on which the contact is based, as it inherently has the same properties and thickness. Its performance also depends on the integrity of internal enclosure features, such as shelves, notches, steps or ledges. The punched contacts can often be removed from the connector housing with a simple tool (a small screwdriver or probe) and sometimes even reused. They can be identified by the seams present along their length. 2. Types of machined contacts of connectors: Machined connector contacts are made by precision turning solid materials, such as by threading. Such machined contacts typically either have separately assembled (press-formed) spring retaining means or are used in conjunction with spring means contained within the housing. Machined connector contacts feature smooth outer surfaces, often with steps or shoulders, and may or may not have flexible spring components, depending on whether the housing contains a spring. Moreover, the performance of the holding mechanism of the machined contact is usually superior to that of the stamped contact, in which case individual or assembled springs can be custom designed without being limited by the substrate properties of the contact itself. The retention function of this machined contact type, which typically requires the use of specialized extraction tools, is highly reliable and can be reused multiple times. Consequently, contact retention devices of this type are typically associated with high reliability (i.e. medical, military) and similar high performance connectors. III. Functional Mechanism of the Connector Contact Type: The way this connector contact type is retained involves the use of various mechanisms that cooperate with each other to ensure that the contacts are within the housing. These are sometimes referred to as Terminal Position Assurance (TPA) styles, which are often encountered in automotive applications. Essentially, this style of contact retention incorporates metal or plastic latches and other parts of the housing to ensure that the contacts remain and are completely secured within the housing. While connector contacts associated with TPA retention types typically do not have spring spears, the associated connector housings typically contain latching functions that can engage a step of the contacts or other functions. Additional enclosure components are designed to fit on the rear of the contacts (wire termination) and will only engage with the enclosure if all connector contacts have been properly locked within the main enclosure. The result is that the connector contacts are preserved, with visual and tactile assurance that all contacts have been properly seated.
