The trend towards miniaturization of wearable and portable products affects the types of connectors available. Generally, there are 4 types of connectors that can be connected via FPC or FFC. The first two connectors listed below are not typically used in portable products, but contribute to the evolution of connectors used. Each connector type has advantages and disadvantages. Low Insertion Force (LIF) connectors use prior art characterized by an integral design of unmoved parts. The flexible circuit board simply plugs into the connector, providing a very simple assembly fit. However, there is no mechanism other than flexible bending to keep the bending in place, so the LIF has little retention force. There are also restrictions on size and spacing.

Flip locking ZIF connectors were developed in previous designs and are widely used in mobile products. The flexible part inserts one hand into the connector and the other hand is used to flip, close or lock. There are front and rear locks, which are easier to assemble than sliding lock partitions, but can cause damage as the user needs to manipulate the joints. The LIF offers a more horizontal alignment than the LIF and slide-lock ZIF connectors, but has a greater choice in size and spacing. One of the biggest advantages is optimizing mobile electronics design. The biggest disadvantage is that it has to be operated with both hands. The sandwich board-board (BTB) connector is a two-piece connector system with a simple one-handed alignment mechanism that allows the user to guide the plug to the receptacle and press it easily. BTB connectors offer a variety of options to improve simple assembly, storage capacity, size and spacing. Vertical alignment only is supported and is a very popular option in mobile products.
