Amphenol ICC's AirMax VS ® High Speed Signal Connector meets the dimensional and electrical requirements described in the CompactPCI ® Serial (PICMG CPCI-s.0) specification developed by PCI Industrial Computer Manufacturers Group (PICMG). The front-end system or connector between the peripheral plate and the back plate is achieved utilizing right-angled male and vertical female heads. The interface of the rear-end input/output board uses a right-angle female and a vertical male. The open pin tab design of the AirMax VS ® signal connector offers flexibility to use differential or single-ended signal, ground, or power pins. The CompactPCI ® Serial Specification migrates the Compact PCI architecture to the high-speed serial interconnect standard, providing greater support for serial point-to-point fabric (such as PCI Express ®, SATA, Ethernet, and USB) that adopt CompactPCI standard dimensions and fully comply with IEC 1101 fabric requirements. The specification defines system and peripheral slots for 3U and 6U board sizes, and also allows hybrid systems to integrate legacy CompactPCI boards and newer CompactPCI serial boards to simplify migration to serial interconnect technology.

This connector also has backward compatibility, allowing it to connect to existing AirMax VS ® connectors with minimal modifications to the package size of the connector. The connector utilizes Amphenol ICC's unshielded design technology (no metal plate) and tightly coupled differential pairs, enabling innovative design improvements to reduce losses and crosstalk. Right-angle female and right-angle male are available to support backplane, mid-plane or coplanar applications. When deploying new devices or upgrading devices, the ability to deploy mating-compatible interfaces and retain critical pin configurations provides opportunities for cost savings. The AirMax VS ® coplanar connector allows two boards to be plugged in on the same plane. This is very useful for many applications, because a base card can be matched with multiple input/output cards, thus providing a variety of low-cost unified input/output options. The ATCA system, Zone 3 connector bypasses the backplane to directly connect the cards at the front and back ends, effectively multiplying the electronic performance of each slot within the system. AirMax VS ® coplanar connectors also work with circuit boards using different technologies, such as tablets and RF boards for radio applications. For example, it may also mate a processor board having a larger number of layers to an input/output board having a smaller number of layers. In addition, coplanar expansion boards are also used for system testing and development. By mating a right angle male to a right angle female, these coplanar connectors can be manufactured using the same connector module as a conventional backplane structure. In fact, the same daughter cards can be used in conventional backplane, midplane, and coplanar configurations. Many of Amphenol ICC's connector families include coplanar mating components. The AirMax ® series has a variety of coplanar configurations, including 3, 4, and 5 pairs of connectors per column with 2mm and 3mm column spacing. The range also includes a 100-ohm version for a wide range of markets as well as an 85-ohm version for certain computer architectures. The AirMax VS2 ® series includes coplanar configurations that support rates up to 20Gb/s. The AirMax VSe ® coplanar connector supports 25Gb/s applications. Zipline ® coplanar connectors have a very high density (84 differential pairs per inch and 33 differential pairs per centimeter). Millipacs ® and Metral ® connectors are also available in coplanar configurations. The coplanar guide module ensures the correct positioning and guidance of the circuit board. The Storage Bridge Dock (SBB) specification, specifically developed for small and medium-sized storage, provides requirements, guidelines, and reference information to ensure compatibility between storage chassis controller slots and storage controllers from multiple independent vendors. This specification defines the mechanical and electronic interfaces between the storage controller and the midboard within the storage chassis. Any bridge/controller card supplied to this specification is compatible with and plugged into any storage chassis slot that meets the SBB design specifications.
