During the selection process of extremely thin coaxial cable assemblies, engineers often focus on a question: What is the maximum current that the extremely thin coaxial cable can withstand? In fact, the current carrying capacity of extremely thin coaxial cables is not a fixed value but is related to factors such as wire diameter AWG, conductor structure, insulation material, connector terminals, and working temperature rise. Taking the I-PEX 83037-100B-01-D introduced in this article as an example, this product belongs to the CABLINE®-UA II 40Pin extremely thin coaxial cable assembly, using 44AWG Micro-Coaxial Cable, with a length of 100mm, a 1-1 structure, and a mating cable end connector model of 20497-040T-30. In the I-PEX official CABLINE®-UA II data, the current rating values are AWG46: 0.15A/contact, AWG44: 0.19A/contact, AWG42: 0.20A/contact; therefore, for the AWG#44 specification used in the 83037-100B-01-D, the engineering selection can focus on the 0.19A/contact parameter.

For engineers, it is a very important concept to distinguish here: The 0.19A/contact marked by I-PEX is the rated current reference value for each contact terminal and cannot be directly understood as "the maximum total current for the entire 40Pin cable harness is 0.19A". 83037-100B-01-D belongs to a 40Pin 1-1 thin coaxial cable assembly, and each coaxial cable corresponds to an independent signal/conductor channel. The actual allowable current requires a comprehensive judgment based on specific Pin definition, the number of simultaneously powered Pins, continuous working time, environmental temperature, heat dissipation conditions, and the temperature rise of the connector and cable material. Especially for Micro-Coax thin coaxial cables, the thinner the wire diameter, the smaller the conductor cross-sectional area, and the more attention that needs to be paid to the joule heat generated during continuous current carrying. Therefore, in actual product design, if certain Pins bear the role of power supply or larger continuous current, it cannot be simply calculated based on the number of "40Pin", and certainly not by directly adding the 0.19A of all Pins as the available working current of the entire cable harness. I-PEX also lists the current parameters of CABLINE®-UA II according to the AWG specification, indicating that the current carrying capacity is directly related to the cable material specification.

The product positioning of I-PEX 83037-100B-01-D is CABLINE®-UA II 40Pin, 100mm, 1-1 structure Micro-Coax ultra-thin coaxial cable assembly. The I-PEX official page explicitly lists this model, along with 83038 and 83039 as the same type of 40Pin 1-1 cable assemblies of 200mm and 300mm. This series of connectors has a Contact Pitch of 0.3mm, Mated Height of 1.27±0.1mm, Depth of 2.9mm, and supports 26, 32, 40, 50Pin as well as AWG42, AWG44, AWG46 Micro-Coax. For purchasers, if they need to find alternative cables of the same specification, it is recommended not to only provide simple conditions such as "40Pin, 100mm", but also confirm the product number 83037-100B-01-D, 40Pin, 100mm, AWG#44, 50Ω, 1-1 structure, both-end connection relationship, and 20497-040T-30 connector matching requirements. For engineers, they should also further verify impedance, insertion loss, return loss, crosstalk, temperature rise, and actual current usage conditions. The I-PEX official marks the 5Gbps/lane NRZ of CABLINE®-UA II as Reference Only, therefore, high-speed signal applications also need to be verified in combination with actual cable length, PCB, and system SI design, and cannot be judged on the final performance solely based on the series nominal values.

If the original equipment uses I-PEX 83037-100B-01-D, when carrying out localization, cost reduction, or supply chain substitution, it is recommended to match items one by one according to "connector—cable—structure—electrical performance—termination method," rather than simply seeking similar-looking 40Pin cables. The cable terminal connector of this product is 20497-040T-30, and the I-PEX official 40Pin recommended components also include 20496-040T-40 Plug Cable Assembly, 2679-040-10 Plug Metal Cover, and 20498-040E-41 Receptacle. For alternative cables, at least the following requirements need to be met: 40Pin quantity, 0.3mm terminal spacing corresponding connector system, 100mm length, AWG#44 Micro-Coax specification, impedance requirements, 1-1 wire sequence/termination structure, and matching equipment interface size. At the same time, temperature rise and reliability verification should be carried out for the actual working current. Our company can provide: I-PEX 83037-100B-01-D compatible alternative cable solution, which can carry out compatible development and production of extremely thin coaxial cables according to the connector model, Pin number, cable specification, length, termination method, and electrical requirements of the customer's equipment, and provide reference for engineering substitution, localization, and procurement options.
